Orientation |
Basic instruction
provided to new carriers
on how to deliver phone books. Key topics include where to
place books, where not to place books, paperwork, etc. Usually
performed by the field managers at delivery stations. |

Pallet |
A portable platform used for stacking,
storing, and moving products such as phone books. Most are
made of wood and measure approximately 4 feet deep, a little
over a yard wide, and only inches tall. |

Pallets are
designed to accommodate
the prongs of a forklift for easy
lifting
and moving of freight. |

Pallet Jack |
A specialized cart for moving pallets of
freight such as phone books. May be manual or powered. See photo above. |

PBX |
Short for private
branch exchange, a fancy
term for a telephone switchboard for facilities with
numerous phone extensions such as hotels, motels, and large
offices. Usually used to denote delivery points that will
need a lot of books (bulk drops). |

Prefix |
The 3 digits following the area code in a
10-digit phone number. Also called Central Office Prefix
(COP). Historically, the prefix identified the telephone
company's central office switch for a given telephone
number. |

Primary Directory |
The main phone book provided to all residents and
businesses in a market. Often supplemented with neighborhood
directories. |
|
Primary Distribution (or Delivery) |
The saturation delivery of new directory
editions to all residents and businesses within a market.
Also called Initial Distribution (or Delivery). Related Terms: Interim (Secondary) Distribution. |

Progress Report |
A report summarizing the number of books
and/or routes that have been delivered on a daily basis
during an initial delivery. |
|
Public Service Commission (PSC) |
Also known as
Public Utility Commission (PUC).
A state-level governing body that regulates and overseas
public utilities such as electricity and local telephone
service. |
