Exchange A telephone call switching unit serving a specific geographical area. Also referred to as NXX. Identified by the 3 digits following the area code in a phone number. Some scopings are by telephone exchange.

Directory delivery maps by telephone exchange are available from PictureRoute.com. Deliveries can also be mapped by any combination of  ZIP codes, postal carrier routes, county, and Census boundaries.
Extended Area Service (EAS) An expanded local calling area. With urban sprawl, calls that were once long-distance may be reclassified as local calls. The implementation of EAS may impact directory publishing and distribution.
Fall-down Route A route in which the delivery carrier quit before completing.
Foreign Directory A phone book for a community other than one's own.
Foreign Directory Center Fulfillment warehouse for foreign directories.
